Celebrating Onam 2025 – A Festival of Unity, Harvest & Flavours 🌸🌾

As August arrives, homes across Kerala and the world bloom with floral carpets, echo with laughter, and fill with the delicious aroma of traditional dishes. Yes, it’s that beautiful time of the year again — Onam 2025 is here! 🌼
This year’s Onam Sadya (traditional feast) will be served on Thiruvonam, falling on August 28th, and celebrations are already in full swing in many Malayali homes. Whether you’re in Kerala or away from home, Onam reminds us all of togetherness, gratitude for the harvest, and our deep cultural roots.
🌾 The Spirit of Onam
Onam commemorates the return of King Mahabali, the beloved mythical ruler whose reign was marked by peace and prosperity. It’s a time when Malayalis believe Mahabali visits every home to see if his people are still happy and united. So naturally, every household shines a little brighter this season — with smiles, traditions, and of course, great food!
🍽️ Onam Sadya – The Heart of the Festival
At Pungu’s Kitchen, Onam means one thing above all: cooking and sharing love through food. The Onam Sadya is a grand vegetarian feast served on a banana leaf, featuring over 20+ dishes that celebrate the season’s abundance.
Some of our must-have Sadya favourites:
Avial – A thick mix of vegetables in coconut and yogurt
Thoran – Stir-fried veggies with coconut
Olan – White pumpkin in coconut milk
Kalan – A tangy yogurt and raw banana curry
Parippu & Ghee – Simple dal with melted love
Payasam – We’re planning to make Ada Pradhaman this year — what about you?
Stay tuned! We’ll be sharing some of these recipes this month for you to try in your own kitchen. 💛
🌸 Home Celebrations
This year, we’re keeping the celebrations intimate — just close family, some dear friends, and a table full of laughter. Shivani (our little helper) is already excited to help with the Pookalam (floral rangoli) and Mahesh is planning a surprise dish — maybe a twist on a traditional curry!
